Want to see a real-life example of Project-Based Learning? Come explore a cross curricular project and hear from science, ELA, and special education teachers. We will detail the process that our students went through in our classrooms to create a high-quality product. In the spring of 2107 the students on the 7 Green Team at Oak Middle School in Shrewsbury, MA partnered with the Mass Audubon Society at Broad Meadow Brook to create field guide materials for their annual fundraising event called the “Bird-a-Thon”. Each student was responsible for researching a bird that could be spotted during the event and creating informational materials about that bird. Students became experts on ecological relationships and the role that their bird plays in the ecosystem and expanded their research and literacy skills. Additionally, students engaged in the design thinking process to analyze existing field guides, assess the needs of the participants of the Bird-a-Thon, brainstorm, prototype, and ultimately create their own materials for the event. During this project students used a variety of apps and tools including: Google Slides to create a book and pamphlets, Google Docs to organize research, Notability to create images, and Adobe Spark to create websites. We will walk you through the process that our students followed and you will leave understanding how our students created a product that had a purpose beyond the school walls.
